We're home. 400 miles in a shot to the West and South.

It's hot. *sigh* The house got hot while we were away, no duh. But by arriving in the evening we're letting it cool off before going to sleep. I got my best pictures up. It's just 64 this time, not 400+.

Cut just for length. )

No, it's not a very good twist, but he's making up for it with the scary face.

I just discovered that Hulu has American Gothic... for free! I am one happy camper tonight. I seriously loved that show, and have missed it.

Indecision [Jul. 18th, 2008|07:06 pm]

resonantfish
I'm trying to come up with something of a 'style guide' to keep myself consistent on the next comic, and I'm finding it impossible to decide which 'me' is ME. Maybe they all suck - but I just want something that I can easily brush out that has personality and some resemblance to myself. Maybe I'm just not finding the right combinations of details, because I like small aspects of all of them. Maybe I shouldn't use a brush. Maybe I should pull an Alex Ross and just do quick traces of photos. There's going to be a lot of talking heads - hopefully with some interesting variation and variety thrown in.

Opinions please.

I have a cunning plan [Jul. 18th, 2008|02:40 pm]

bluerain
[Current Music |A3, "Woke Up This Morning" (the Sopranos theme)]

I like to watch "History's Worst Jobs" on the History channel. It's hosted by Tony Robinson, who used to play Baldrick in the "Black Adder" series.

In the Tudor episode, one of the jobs he investigates is "executioner." At one point, he's practicing, with a melon, which he chops, then has to hold up and proclaim "this is the head of a traitor!"

Fans of Black Adder will understand my compulsion to shout back "no it's not! It's a huge pumpkin with a pathetic moustache drawn on it!"

I wonder if that went through Tony's head.

strange as it seems his musical dreams ain't quite so bad [Jul. 18th, 2008|06:00 pm]
wilwheaton

We've been shooting nights this week on Criminal Minds, and I've worked every single day, which doesn't leave any time to write, or do much of anything else. I got home at 4 this morning, didn't fall asleep until 5, and then had to explain to my dogs that, no, just because I was in bed and the sun was coming up, I'm not interested in getting up to do stuff with them.

So I only got to sleep for seven disturbed hours, and I feel like I'm on the road to Bat Country right now. Luckily for me, I don't go to set until 5:30 tonight, and I don't have any dialog today.

Despite the havoc the last few days have unleashed on my body (which is very confused by the hours I'm forcing it to keep, and [spoiler]) I have loved every second of the experience.

I'm keeping a production diary, which I can't release until my episode airs in October, but I can safely say that working on this show, with this cast and crew, creating this character, has reawakened my slumbering love of acting. I'll have more to say about that when I can really analyze how I feel about it and why. (short short version: I miss the camaraderie of being in a cast, and I'd forgotten how good it feels to discover interesting moments with the director, writers, and other actors. I work best while collaborating, it seems.)

Anyway, I feel so blurry that the doll's trying to kill me and the toaster's laughing at me, so I'm going to sign off. But before I do, a couple of things:

  • I missed the Watchmen trailer. It was up and then down while I was at work. Dang. Oh! Wait, there it is on iTunes. Wow, that was awesome.

  • I am too tired to see Dark Kinght (I didn't correct that, because it illustrates exactly how tired I am. Yes, I misspelled the title of the freakin' Batman movie I've been waiting my whole life to see. Jeebus) today, and probably won't get to see it and the Watchmen trailer until next week, right before Comic-Con.

  • I did not miss Doctor Horrible's Sing Along Blog, and neither should you. It's absolutely magnificent, the whole cast is outstanding, and my fellow ACME alum Felicia Day is sensational. I want the soundtrack, and I want it NOW! Shane Nickerson said that it's probably the best thing he's ever seen that was made for the Internet, and better than most sitcoms. I totally agree, and wish Shane would stop saying these things before I get a chance to say them.

  • Wheaton's Books in the Wild at Flickr has 77 members and 48 supermegaawesome contributions. Yay!

  • This is a reminder to everyone who has tickets that I will be at Comic-Con from Thursday until Saturday of next week. I'm probably going to sell out the second printing of Happiest Days while I'm there. I'll be with my friend Rich Stevens at the Dumbrella booth, which is number 1335. MC Frontalot is going to be there, too, so if you're looking to fill that final square on Nerd Bingo, come and see us.

  • On Thursday, I'll be on a panel called Star Trek Without a Blueprint: How books and comics keep expanding the boundaries of the Star Trek universe. We'll be talking about the future of Star Trek publishing in room 32AB from 4:00-5:00. I'll be on the panel with Andy Mangels (moderator and Star Trek author), Margaret Clark (executive editor, Pocket Books), Andy Schmidt (senior editor, IDW) and Star Trek authors Kevin Dilmore, Dave Mack, Scott Tipton, and Dayton Ward.

  • Finally, TrekMovie has the poster we've all been waiting to see. It looks awesome.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Wanted: basic info on chemical sensitivities [Jul. 18th, 2008|01:28 pm]

bruceb
This is on Mom's behalf. She needs some supporting info to explain basic facts of life to neighbors who are not inclined to be cooperative about holding off on some spraying because it makes her sick and miserable.

Y'all who deal with such stuff, like her and me: please recommend some good basic info pages to look at, preferably written very simply and clearly.

Posts from anyone come by to argue that we're all deluded, and other argument bait, will be ruthlessly pruned. Fair warning.

I can has dragons! [Jul. 18th, 2008|02:56 pm]

archangelbeth
Curledcrest Adopt one today! Female
Reliant Adopt one today! Male.
Gazette Adopt one today! Female.

I believe the child will have me trying to breed them soon.

Yes, she came over, and as predicted, Gazette and Reliant have been introduced to one another. Ahem.
They refuse to even go near each other! Oh dear. Will Reliant and Curledcrest get along? Tune in tomorrow to see if Reliant will come out of his lair or if he's still sulking! (Though after today, I think I'll just include links instead of the images, for the grownups.)

In the meantime, for the eggs and hatchlings hidden beneath the LJ cut, one click a day seems to be reasonable... O:>
The ones that I am concerned for, I will put outside the LJ cut, so they get more viewings. >_>

Dragons below the fold. )

My mom's eggs and hatchlings:
Pepelth Adopt one today! (You think it's a girl, although you're not sure how to check.) Grelth Adopt one today! (This egg [was] sitting in a pile of small pebbles. [The hatchling] enjoys gathering pebbles and other small rocks and putting them in a pile) Cilanth Adopt one today! (This egg [was] sitting in a patch of grass and small flowers even though there's no sun in the cave. Aww...It's a cute baby dragon...except for the tangle of dangerous-looking vines surrounding it...) Adopt one today! (This egg is hidden behind the others, as if it is shy.) Adopt one today! (purple)
My mom also has adult Rosaleth.

[info]celticdragonfly's hatchling:
Adopt one today! (You think it's a girl, although you're not sure how to check.) It's grown wings!

[info]masonk's eggs:
Adopt one today!(pile of pebbles), Adopt one today!(purple), Adopt one today!(PINK!)

Meanwhile... Sadly, yesterday found a fox dead by the side of our driveway. I do hope it wasn't Hungry Fox. Much sadness. I called community services and they took it away this morning, apparently. (There are no pictures. Poor thing.)

I am still convincing this strand of yarn to crochet up to the same length as the first. Feh!

Ze spouse has a white iPhone of his own. He seems pleased with it.

No words...just no words! [Jul. 18th, 2008|12:08 pm]

jarodrussell
From here:
AC: I don't know about appropriate, but it does seem like the right costume for the character. She should be in black... it's in her name. And leather is very tough... it saved my brother's skin (literally) when he laid his motorcycle down at about 80 mph (He doesn't do that anymore. He's a very good Dad now.). If she's gonna have baddies coming at her with knives and swords etc... the leather isn't armor, but it's damn tough, and it's easier to deliver some good kicks if it's a body suit and not pants.
Was your brother wearing fishnets "when he laid his motorcycle down at about 80 mph?" I doubt it. So if leather is such a great thing to wear in a fight...and I agree that it probably is for hand-to-hand combat...then why is a third of Black Canary's body exposed?

You want to say "some girls just like fishnets," fine. You wants to make the same, stupid crack about guys staring at her legs, fine. But then don't go on about how from personal experience you know how wise it is to have a heftier material between one's skin and the elements. That's just...AURGH!

AURGH!

I've tried to just ignore this, because frankly I think that Barbie Canary looks more like Lord Fanny than Dinah Lance. But when someone goes on about how great a thicker material is for a fight and then all but says, "Except for her legs, because how else are the villains supposed to tranq., cut, stab, or claw her in a fight," my inner geek won't be quelled.

The only Black Canary figure I'll ever own is the one with the Butch Guice costume. That thing had everything: full-body protection, no fuck-me heels, utility belt, and pockets.

Doctor Developer: I like the fishnets, but she's wrong about, ah, how her legs, um, "offer a great distraction ... before delivering a round-house kick to the head." Why would you get close enough for her to deliver a kick when you can, as you say, hit her with a dart from across the street.

This submission does not meet our specifications [Jul. 18th, 2008|09:51 am]

bruceb
I dreamed that the Governator approved a huge budget for renovating California schools, including my alma mater. But every submission had to meet standards designed by Sunset magazine editors, who decided this was their chance to make every school a beautiful and elegant school. And everyone had to be really serious in submitting their proposals. If it looked like you were having any fun, your school could be stricken off for insufficient worthiness.

I got so annoyed I woke up.

They didn't mentioned Empowered by name, but I still thought it was crucially kewl that it showed up.

Making DXP plans [Jul. 18th, 2008|09:51 am]

[atia_julii]
I am currently sitting at work and chafing at the bit, envying those of our particular brand of crazy that managed to get off today. My fault - I didn't think until two weeks ago "Hey, maybe I should request Friday off", only to discover six members of my team had already put requests in for this weekend. They are all Batman geeks, so it's no surprise that every five seconds I'm muttering DAMN YOU DARK KNIGHT!

Anyway. I need to find some LJ teams for the weekend. Anyone got stuff in the work that has room for a player to join?
